Graham Turner
We sadly have to announce the passing of Graham Turner, 7th Dan on 9th March 2025.
Graham stated Judo in his mid-thirties at Tonbridge Judo Club, Kent.
He started refereeing as a result of a poor decision (in his opinion) whilst watching his son participating in a local competition, when he was told “if you think you can do better, become a referee”.
He quickly progressed through the ranks to National Referee where his skill on assessing contests was driven to achieve the highest level. He was awarded EJU Referee in 1985 and IJF A (International) Referee in 1992.
As a referee Graham attended many World Championships and European Events. He was selected to referee the Olympic Games of 1996 in Atlanta USA but sadly broke his arm falling off a ladder a month before he was due to fly out.
Graham was an active member of both the Sussex and Southern Area committees for many years. He was also a member of the National Refereeing commission until 2000.
Graham was a Senior Examiner for many years and completed his last term on the Area committee as the Director of Senior Examiners.
He was a straight talking person who was always looking to progress the sport of Judo, encouraging many fellow judoka to move forward in both refereeing & promotions.
One of his highest achievements was being the British Judo Squad Manager at the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000.
He was awarded his 7th Dan by Colin McIver in 2016.
